Tearout Is a Skill, Not a Sledgehammer
Anyone can rip out a floor. Doing it without wrecking what's underneath is the actual job. The subfloor exposed by tearout is the foundation of the next floor, and every gouge in a slab or splintered patch of plywood turns into prep cost on the other side of the project.
So our removal work is deliberately unspectacular: tack strip pried without chunking the slab, hardwood pulled with the grain instead of against it, tile lifted with the right tools at the bond line. The room ends up broom-clean and genuinely ready — which is the whole point.
Tearout is included in most of our flooring quotes, and it's also available on its own if you're lining up the new floor separately.
What Each Floor Type Takes to Remove
Carpet is the quick one — cut, rolled, and out with the pad and staples in hours. Laminate and floating vinyl unclick nearly as fast. Nailed hardwood takes patience and pry bars, and it's worth asking whether it should come out at all — original Valley oak is often a candidate for sanding and refinishing instead of the dumpster.
Glued vinyl and tile are the heavy lifts. Thinset-bonded tile over a slab comes up with demolition hammers, and the mortar left behind gets ground flat with vacuum-attached equipment. Old adhesives get scraped and ground until the slab meets the next floor's spec.
One caution earned from Van Nuys housing stock: some pre-1980s sheet vinyl, 9×9 tiles, and black cutback adhesive can contain asbestos. That material gets tested before anyone disturbs it — a lab check costs little, and guessing wrong isn't an option we offer.
Dust Control and Protecting the Rest of the House
Tile tearout is the dustiest thing that happens in residential flooring, and the difference between a professional job and a nightmare is containment. Work areas get sealed with plastic at the doorways, HVAC returns get masked so dust doesn't tour the house through the ducts, and floor protection runs along the haul path from the room to the truck.
Furniture gets moved and covered, adjoining rooms stay livable, and the day ends with a vacuum-and-wipe pass — not a promise to "get to it." In occupied homes across Van Nuys, especially with kids or anyone dust-sensitive, this is the part clients thank us for most.

Why does professional flooring removal matter?
Because the goal isn't just getting the old floor out — it's leaving a subfloor the new floor can actually go over. Careless tearout gouges slabs, splinters wood subfloors, and leaves adhesive that telegraphs through new flooring. Professional removal protects the surface underneath, controls the dust, and hauls everything away legally the same day.
How long does flooring removal take?
Carpet comes out fast — a whole house in a few hours. Glued vinyl, laminate, and nailed hardwood typically run half a day to a day. Tile is the slow one: thinset-bonded tile over slab can take a full day or more for a large area, plus grinding the leftover mortar flat. We fold tearout time into the overall flooring schedule so there are no surprises.
Is tile removal really that messy?
It's the dustiest job in flooring, which is why containment matters more than muscle. We seal doorways and HVAC returns, run vacuum-attached grinders where the slab needs cleanup, and haul debris out through a planned path. There's still cleanup at the end — it's demolition — but your whole house shouldn't taste like thinset for a week.
What about old glued-down adhesive on the slab?
It has to come off or be dealt with, not buried. Old carpet glue and vinyl adhesive get scraped and ground until the slab is clean enough for the next floor's requirements. One caution with older Valley homes: some pre-1980s resilient flooring and black cutback adhesive can contain asbestos, and that material should be tested before anyone disturbs it. We flag it when we see it.
Where does the old flooring actually go?
Off your property the same day, to a proper disposal or recycling facility — not a pile in your driveway waiting for a weekend dump run. Clean wood and metal transition strips get separated for recycling where facilities accept them, and the rest goes out as sorted construction debris.
Can I save money by tearing out the floor myself?
Sometimes — carpet in particular is a reasonable DIY job if you're careful with the tack strip. The risk is with tile and glued floors, where DIY tearout often damages the slab or subfloor and the repair costs more than the removal saved.
